ASSISI OR CASCIA
Whether your motivation is religious, or as a lover of art and history, a trip to Assisi or Cascia is an unforgettable experience. Assisi, the 12th century birthplace of St Francis, there are many sites relating to his life which can be visited, his place of birth, the Porziuncola Chapel where the order was founded and the “Eremo delle Carceri” a peaceful monastery in the nearby hills, where he famously preached to the birds. Since the election of Pope Francis in 2013, pilgrimage to Assisi has even greater significance. The city’s masterpiece, the Basilica of St. Francis is important both from a religious and artistic perspective. This imposing edifice is in fact three churches built one above the other, and is filled with many important late Medieval and Early Renaissance frescoes by artists including Cimabue, Giotto and Simone Martini.
If you choose Cascia instead of Assisi, we will take you to visit the sanctuary of Santa Rita, home to Saint Rita of Cascia, one of Catholicism’s most revered saints, often referred to as the “Saint of the Impossible” and also the place where a Eucharistic Miracle is preserved. It is therefore high on the list for many Catholic pilgrims. The charming town of Roccaporena, birthplace of the Saint, maintains the memory of Saint Rita when she was a young girl, a wife, a mother and a widow.
