Catacombs Tour and Underground Tour

Rome isn't a mere city. It is a living, breathing museum and much of its historic treasures lie beneath its surface. 90% of all roads, buildings, and churches in Rome are considered ruins which were once on the surface, and then later abandoned, filled with soil and built over, in a process that has continued for centuries. Reasearchers are still digging what in the future may potentially develop into nine maps of Rome one on top of the other...if you are a fan of dark corridors and trekking into mysterious archeological sites, then these two tours will be among your favorites!

Tour 1 Catacombs and Saint Clemente's Church.

Your guide will take you to Priscilla's Catacombs on the Via Salaria, probably the best preserved catacombs of Rome. They are never packed with tour groups, often empty and silent as catacombs should be! Unlike all other catacombs in town, where your guide has to drop you into a doctrine-inspired crowded tour run by a spiritual leader, Priscilla's Catacombs Nuns entrust your guide with the highest confidence she/he deserves, by letting her/him lead your private tour and tell you all you should know about these ancient gravesites, including how and why they were made and when they were abandoned. Your guide will also show you all the richly painted catacomb niches. You will then visit Saint Clemente, the most complete underground archeological dig under a church in Rome, where four layers of history, a pagan temple, a fountain still running water and two roads were all lost during the great fire of Nero in AD 64, and that archeologists rediscovered and re-opened to public.

Running days: Everyday except for Sunday and Monday mornings.

Booking: It is essential when you book this tour to let us know how many people will be in your group, the day you want to schedule the tour, as well as any potential walking related challenges that those in your group may encounter. Please write the date in the following format with the month spelled out to avoid confusion (example: June 24, early evening, two adults, two seniors, three children) and please wait for our answer and confirmation.

Dress code: See FAQ and WHAT SHOULD I KNOW sections about shorts, sleeveless shirts and miniskirts.

Duration: About 3 hours

Tour 2 Saint Clemente, Saint Nicholas, Saints Giovanni and Paolo Undergrounds

Your guide will take you to visit Saint Clemente, the most complete underground archeological dig under a church in Rome, where layers of history, a pagan temple, a fountain still flowing water and two roads were all buried in the big fire of Nero in AD 64; archeologists rediscovered and re-opened to public the whole site! Then, you will walk up the Celian Hill along the Claudianeum Temple huge ruins, to reach the underground painted houses of Saints Giovanni e Paolo, known as the "little Pompeii in Rome" which consists of ten painted rooms, a garden staircase, a wonderfully painted courtyard and a little antiquities museum. The tour will end in the rooms beneath Saint Nicholas in Prison that hide tombs and the bold ruins of three temples dated II and I centuries BC.

Running days: Everyday except for Sunday mornings. During the whole Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Saint Giovanni and Paolo will not be available unless privately arranged: please write us in advance if you notice that your days of stay will be compromised; we can obtain an exclusive permission!
